Proposed Centre of Excellence Opportunities

In phase two of our vision in creating a centre of excellence in Mallow we recognise the need for Decontamination & Sterilisation educational requirements in Ireland. There are very few recognised courses that enables students and employees of medical facilities to advance their careers.

Training in Sterile Services Technology

Students can study for a Higher Certificate in Sterile Services Technology at our Centre of Excellence in Mallow. On successfully completing the first year’s course the student can continue on to do a Degree in Sterile Services Management. This course relates to the work related day for the student. They learn how to use and understand how to do things in a professional way.

The course is well structured and with the Blackboard E Learning system we will save the employers losing their staff for 4 days per month. It will save substantially on travelling to Dublin weekly and its associated costs.

This course was developed with the Hospital and healthcare sector and is aimed primarily at the sterile services environment. The aim is to give students the opportunity to choose a career path which qualifies them in a range of scientific, technological and sterile services within the health care sector. The course is run over 2 years.
Having to complete assignments and study for exams can be very tough as well as holding down a full time job.


Distance Learning

The Blackboard Learning System is a virtual learning environment and course management system developed by Blackboard Inc. Features include course management, a customizable open architecture, and a scalable design that allows for integration with student information systems and authentication protocols. It may be installed on local servers or hosted by Blackboard ASP Solutions. Its main purposes are to add online elements to courses traditionally delivered face-to-face and to develop completely online courses with few or no face-to-face meetings.


SSD Supervisors/Managers Course

This course is aimed at HSE staff and others in the private sector who have responsibility for the management and production of all sterile services and goods. These include Sterile Services managers and supervisors.

Objectives

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Define various sterilization and washer-disinfection processes
  • Describe the operating principles of porous load sterilizers
  • Carry out daily and weekly tests
  • Identify appropriate documentation
  • Explain roles and responsibilities of key personnel involved with sterile services
  • Reference and describe specified testing procedures
  • Correctly interpret test results provided by the CP(D) and explain certification responsibilities

Prerequisite to attending the course

Delegates should be working in or towards a supervisor/manager role within an acute sterile services environment.


Basic Infection Control and Decontamination of Dental Instruments

This course is aimed at personnel involved in the decontamination of dental instruments within dental practices/sterile service providers. These may include Dental Practice Managers, Dental Nurses, Decontamination Leads, Designated Persons or Sterile Services Technicians, and any other person who is responsible for the decontamination of dental instruments.

Objectives

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Explain the need, responsibilities and purpose) for all those involved in the decontamination process within the delivery of HSE/private primary dental services
  • Identify & discuss the essential quality requirements and explore the implementation issue’s applied to primary dental care
  • To be able to develop policies, procedures and protocols to support the decontamination process and storage of dental instruments
  • Identify the processes required for equipment procurement, training, maintenance and validation
  • Apply techniques for the decontamination of Dental Unit Water Lines

Decontamination Lead

This course has been devised to meet the needs of those taking on the role of Decontamination Lead.

To provide you with the required knowledge and skills to perform the role of Decontamination Lead.

Objectives

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  • Explain the principles of decontamination and the importance of performing the decontamination process as set out in relevant guidelines
  • Identify and reference the appropriate guidelines that relate to aspects of decontamination
  • Explain the importance of infection prevention and control in relation to decontamination
  • Understand the function and audit requirements for different types of decontamination equipment involved in the decontamination process
  • Recognise the guidelines that apply to the management of equipment and environment involved in the decontamination process
  • Explain the principles of audit and have an understanding of how to perform an audit within a decontamination area
  • Identify the training needs of staff working within decontamination
  • Understand the value of a quality management system in the management of decontamination and its associated risks within a healthcare environment
  • Implement an effective means of monitoring compliance in relation to decontamination within a healthcare environment
  • Identify and manage the risks associated with decontamination
  • Understand the role of the Decontamination Lead and the expectations in terms of regulations and guidelines
  • Understanding the principles of business continuity in relation to decontamination and how to ensure it is embedded within an organisation
